In September 2020, Alberta Health Services issued a Request for Proposals for new continuing care spaces in Alberta. Strathmore was one of the communities identified as a priority for long term care, supportive living and hospice.
Former Strathmore resident, Doug Murphy, through his company Shasta Seniors Living submitted a proposal to Alberta Health Services to construct and operate a combined long term care, supportive living and hospice facility. Shasta was notified they were the successful candidate in 2022 and received a contract commitment in 2023.
VOSH Architects’ international award winning building design has been adapted for the smaller Strathmore Care Community through the input of Shasta, AHS and the VOSH design team.

Located on the north east corner of the Strathmore Hospital and Health Centre the Strathmore Care Community will feature 54 long term care private rooms, 36 private supportive living and memory care rooms and a single storey separate hospice with 6 private rooms. The care of the residents will be funded by Assisted Living Alberta and Alberta Health Services. Residents will pay the monthly government controlled accommodation rent.
Construction of the $43.5 million building will begin September 2025 and will be completed and ready for residents in February 2027.
Strathmore Care Community will employ approximately 75 -80 full time staff, from registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, health care aides to food service and hospitality people. We will provide approximately 140,000 hours of care and have a total payroll of close to $6 million.
All residents will access Strathmore Care Community through AHS’s Community Care Access, and Transition Services. For further information on Strathmore Care Community please contact Transition Services.
